Botulinum Toxin (Botox, Vistabel, Azzalure,Bocouture) is a muscle relaxant injection. When botulinum toxin is injected into a specific muscle it blocks the signal from the nerve to the muscles in the face. This means that the nerve ending cannot tell the muscle to move.

It is used to treat frown lines between the eyebrows, horizontal forehead lines, crows feet, lip wrinkles and neck lines as well as treating excessive sweating (hyperhidrosis). Botulinum toxin can also be used to reposition or lift the eyebrows by a few millimetres. This is sometimes called a 'chemical brow lift'. It can lessen so-called 'bunny lines' (lines along the top of the nose caused when some people smile). Botulinum toxin can be used to treat all wrinkles which are the result of normal facial movement. It is not suitable for permanent wrinkles caused by excessive exposure to the sun.

Botulinum toxin does not remove wrinkles indefinitely; it is usually necessary to have a treatment every 3-6 months to maintain and improve upon the original results. It has been proven to be quite safe to have botulinum toxin injections at the above frequency over a period of years.

Over time your skin loses its full, firm, youthful appearance because of the natural ageing process. From an early age the amount of collagen your body produces slows down. Collagen is the substance your body produces to give your skin a firm and youthful appearance. You also lose fat tissue which maintains the fullness of your face so your face becomes thin and narrow, making you look older. SculptraTM helps your skin to replace lost collagen to smooth lines and wrinkles, helping you to look younger naturally.

SculptraTM is an injectable treatment that stimulates the body's own collagen to smooth out lines and wrinkles. SculptraTM also restores lost facial volume gradually giving you a fuller, younger looking face. SculptraTM is often referred to as the 'Liquid Face Lift'.

Suitable areas for Sculptra TM

Unlike some dermal fillers which will only treat individual lines and wrinkles SculptraTM actually treats most areas of your face that might concern you e.g.

Lines, wrinkles and folds
Lines between your nose and mouth (nasolabial folds)
Lines around the corners of your mouth
Wrinkles in the cheeks and chin
Sunken cheeks
Recessed temple area
Jowls

Why Sculptra TM?
SculptraTM works gradually to give a natural effect. Usually 2-3 treatments are required and results should be noticeable after approximately 6 weeks, (however, in some patients this may take longer or require more treatments).

Clinical studies have shown that the results of SculptraTM can last for up to 2 years following your last treatment, significantly longer than many other injectable treatments. No allergy testing is required before treatment, unlike some other products.

The main ingredient of SculptraTM has been used in medicine for over 25 years and has a good safety profile.

SculptraTM is marketed by sanofi-aventis, one of the world's leading pharmaceutical companies

Why is Sculptra TM different?
A number of choices are available to you when you are deciding on treatment. Common temporary fillers do not provide long term reduction of wrinkles and creases, and their results are often short-lived; meaning that you may have to return many times to treat the same line again.

SculptraTM is a collagen stimulator that reduces lines, wrinkles and folds and replaces the fullness of the face that has been lost by the ageing process. SculptraTM works by stimulating your own facial collagen production to replenish your skin, providing a natural looking result. It works gradually to restore what has been lost and once your treatment plan is complete, the results can last for more than 3 years.

Nurse injecting Botox
What happens during the treatment and how long will it take to recover?

Preparing for treatment
This treatment is simple, quick and safe. You can resume your normal activities immediately after the procedure. Many people have their treatments in their lunch-time, for example, and return to work straight afterwards.

Following a detailed discussion to ascertain your needs, our nurse practitioner will then take a medical history to make sure that there are no reasons why you are not suited to be treated with botulinum toxin. In line with current legislation an appointment will be made for you to return at later date for your treatment. This 'cooling off' period is to give you time to consider all the information you have been given so that you can be certain you wish to proceed.

Prior to treatment you will be asked to sign a consent form indicating that you have understood what the treatment may do, the potential side effects and also that the drug is not currently licensed for this specific use in the U.K. Photographs may also be taken by the nurse with you smiling and frowning and with your face at rest. This will be used as 'before and after' images to show you how successful your treatment has been.

The Injections
First, the area to be injected will be cleaned with an antiseptic cleanser. Then, using micro needles and disposable syringes, tiny amounts of botulinum toxin, will be injected into several points in the agreed area. Most people find the procedure painless however if required a numbing cream can be applied prior to treatment. Immediately after the treatment you may notice some redness and bumps around the injection point this usually settles within minutes.

Repeat procedures
Depending on the area treated, dose used, and how you respond to botulinum toxin, repeat treatments will be required around every 3 - 6 months. These will maintain and potentially improve upon the initial effect observed.

Recovery time
The whole treatment should usually take no longer than 10 - 15 minutes and you can normally drive immediately and go about your usual activities. It is recommended you stay upright for 3-4 hours after the treatment and avoid any strenuous exercise for up to 24 hours after treatment.

Side Effects
Side effects include a small amount of temporary bleeding or mild swelling which may occur at the injection site. In some cases more extensive bruising may occur, especially around the eyes, but this can usually be covered up with make-up, and is only temporary.

Occasionally, patients experience a headache after treatment, and, very rarely, double vision.

When botulinum toxin is injected into the forehead area, there is a very slight possibility that it may cause weakness of the muscle holding up the eyelid causing a 'partial ptosis' or drooping of the upper eyelid this is however very rare and can be improved with the use of eye drops that your practitioner can prescribe.
